History of Ataköy Baruthane

Also known as Istanbul BaruthanesiBakırköy Baruthanesi, or Baruthane-i Amire, the construction of Ataköy Baruthane was completed in 1700. Production began in 1701, but a major explosion in 1707 led to its complete destruction. It was rebuilt and operated until 1724. However, after a fire in 1725, the structure was damaged and resumed operation in 1727.

In 1765, extensive renovations were initiated, including repairs to structures like the Kalhane (powder mill)powder storage areaswarehousespolishing house (perdahtane)chief powder master’s office (Barutçubaşı Dairesi), and watchtowers. These renovations continued until 1785. During the reign of Selim III, the Istanbul, Gallipoli, and Thessaloniki powder factories were united under a single administration.

During the Tanzimat Era, the Baruthane came under the command of the Tophane Müşirliği. In the Republican era, the Baruthane changed hands multiple times. In 1957, the Ataköy residential complex was built on the Baruthane land. Later, in 1972, the Ataköy Baruthane was restored by the Bakırköy Municipality and repurposed in 1993 as the Yunus Emre Cultural Center.
