We have restored the historic Fener Houses, dating back to the 18th century, and reintroduced them to Istanbul as a vibrant art and cultural venue. For centuries, the Fener Houses overlooked the Golden Horn. We saved these structures from neglect and destruction, restoring them under IMM Heritage in line with universal preservation principles and techniques. Now reopened as Haliç Sanat, these buildings have been transformed into a public space that enriches the city with art and culture.
History of Haliç Sanat
Located in the Fatih district, the neighborhoods of Fener and Balat stand out as significant residential areas of Istanbul due to their unique position overlooking the Golden Horn and their rich history. These areas have been sought-after places of settlement since the Eastern Roman era and gained further political, religious, and cultural importance during the Ottoman period. The structures known as Fener Houses were built in the late 18th century. Designed as selamlık or divanhane sections of grand residences by the Ottoman elite, these houses combined residential and commercial functions using a stone-brick hybrid construction technique. Although part of larger complexes from the 18th century, the Fener Houses are among the few surviving examples of Istanbul’s oldest residential architecture. After a careful restoration process, they now operate as Haliç Sanat, serving Istanbul residents and visitors as a space for art and culture.
Restoration of Haliç Sanat
Under IMM Heritage, the Fener Houses were restored and reopened as Haliç Sanat 1, Haliç Sanat 2, and Haliç Sanat 3. These structures were strengthened and redesigned as modern art spaces to meet contemporary needs while preserving their historical significance. Today, Haliç Sanat provides a vibrant, free public space where:

- Visitors can enjoy seasonal events and exhibitions,
- Guests can relax in the garden, sip coffee, and take in the beautiful view of the Golden Horn.
