The Golden Horn Shipyard, one of the world’s oldest functioning shipyards, has been converted into a public center following comprehensive restoration and refunctionalization efforts by IMM Heritage. Located in one of Istanbul’s most beautiful spots, Istanbul Art now serves as a museum and cultural hub, welcoming art enthusiasts.
History of the Golden Horn Shipyard
The Golden Horn Shipyard, part of the Ottoman naval base Tersane-i Amire, was established in 1455 by order of Fatih Sultan Mehmed and built by Kaptan-ı Derya Paşa. It played a significant role in the Ottoman navy and was expanded during the reign of Sultan Selim I, becoming a large complex stretching from Kasımpaşa to Galata. In 1913, the complex was divided into three shipyards: Golden Horn, Taşkızak, and Camialtı.
Today, the Golden Horn Shipyard remains the only active shipyard from the Ottoman era, located between Kasımpaşa Stream and Atatürk Bridge. It houses three docks, two slipways, workshops, and administrative buildings.
From Golden Horn Shipyard to Istanbul Art
Recognizing its importance in maritime history, the Golden Horn Shipyard was preserved through comprehensive restoration efforts by IMM Heritage. In 2024, it was reopened as Istanbul Art, a cultural and arts center for Istanbul residents.
The site was designed to maintain its shipyard function while also serving as a museum, performing arts and cultural center, and a hub for workshops. It has become a meeting point for art enthusiasts and young people alike.
What’s at Istanbul Art?
Istanbul Art brings nearly 600 years of maritime heritage to life while offering:
- A museum,
- Performing arts and cultural spaces,
- Exhibition areas,
- Children’s workshop spaces, and
- Social venues like a restaurant.
The museum also features a special collection, including portraits of Fatih Sultan Mehmed and Suleiman the Magnificent, alongside rotating exhibitions. It opened with the mixed exhibition “Ah Beautiful Istanbul” and hosted “A Collector’s Story: Mustafa Taviloğlu,” showcasing Taviloğlu’s private collection, started in 1972.

- By Metro: Take the Yenikapı – Hacıosman Metro Line to Şişhane Station, exit at the Kasımpaşa exit, and walk for 7–8 minutes.
- By Ferry: It is a 5-minute walk from Kasımpaşa Ferry Pier.
- By Bus: Take any bus passing through Şişhane and walk for 5 minutes.
