We are uncovering Istanbul’s historical heritage in every corner of the city and returning it to its people. One of Büyükada’s key memory points, Taş Mektep, which had been abandoned for many years, has been revitalized as a culture, arts, and community center and gifted back to Istanbul.

History of Taş Mektep

Constructed in the second half of the 19th century on Büyükada’s Kadıyoran Street by the Orthodox Patriarch Sofronios, Taş Mektep, also known as Sofronios Mansion, stands as a symbol of the rich cultural diversity of Adalar's architecture.

In 1922, Taş Mektep was purchased by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and served first as the Köprülü Mehmed Paşa Numune School, then as the Büyükada Primary School, until 1967. From 1967 to 1978–1979, it operated as the Büyükada Secondary School before being vacated due to fire risks, remaining unused and decaying for many years.

Though the architect of Taş Mektep is unknown, the building has played a pivotal role in shaping the identity of Büyükada, particularly in its contributions to education over different periods.

The condition of Taş Mektep before the Restoration

Restoration of Taş Mektep

After decades of neglect, IMM Heritage began a thorough restoration of Taş Mektep in 2021. Revitalized with reinforcement and refunctionalization efforts, the historical structure reopened in June 2023 as a cultural hub on Büyükada. Today, Taş Mektep features a café, a library, and an exhibition hall, welcoming visitors from all over Istanbul.
